As I was reading this book it hit me again the difference between good authors and great authors. Great authors, IMHO, are great because they allow us to see into the daily lives and motivations of the characters. We learn more than just what we need to know about the plot, we learn what the characters are like as people. Ms. Neill does this so well that it is almost unnoticeable. Early on we have a conversation in the dining hall between Lindsey, Margot, Brody and Merit. No spoilers, nothing that moves the plot along, just 4 friends hanging out over breakfast. And I want to hang out with them, also. I care enough about these characters to want to just hang out with them, and that is what makes a great author. The plot is, as always in Chicagoland, a hot mess of people gunning for the house, murder in the city and emergencies only Merit can solve. Always entertaining, fast paced, interesting, villains you love to hate and supporting characters you love. Telling you anything more than the blurb would be spoiler-y, so I'm not going to do it - but if you have liked the previous books in the series you will love this book. (The only complaint is that I am getting tired of their being some angst in Ethan's and Merit's relationship in every novel. Enough already!)
If you have not read the previous books, you need to read the series from the beginning. this is not a stand-alone.
If you can't tell already, I loved this book!
Would I read it again? Yes! Absolutely!

Tight writing, an interesting world and characters, various relationships, emotion, tension, some mystery and action are found in every book in this series. These things alone are great for the first few books, but without something new, there wouldn’t be enough to keep coming back. And that’s exactly what the author does for us; the focus of what’s going on both locally as well as with the ruling vampire organization shifts with every few books. That aspect is keeping the series interesting with this 10th installment. And with the end of this book, we’ll see yet another shift in the focus.
Ethan Sullivan, Master Vampire of Cadogan House, had issued a challenge to the head of the GP—the antiquated ruling body of vampires—in the last book and is waiting on Darius’ response. Ethan believes he’d be a much better ruler and has the backing of his friends and his entire House and is waiting for Darius to tell him exactly what the challenge will entail.
Merit has been the House Sentinel for the past year. She’s called to consult on a murder when it looks like vampires are being set-up as the culprit. And it’s only the beginning as the serial killer strikes again and again. Merit, Mallory and Jonah are involved in tracking down leads while consulting for the Chicago Police Department. And a third mystery that takes up less ink is also tackled; this one a much bigger issue for vampires.
Mallory plays a much larger role in this book than she has in a while, and it’s great to see things back on track for her. Ethan and Merit obviously love each other, but he’s not sharing something from his past that’s bothering him, putting a big strain on their relationship when Merit keeps pushing him to tell her about it. In this case they must both learn to bend. The difference between Ethan’s beginnings and how he has changed—caring about people and doing the right thing—ties in wonderfully with the main storyline.
Expect some dirty tactics as well as honor in this story, and a whole lot of emotion. I suggest having tissues handy, especially as you come towards the end of the book. I don’t think you’ll see this coming.
Found myself getting into work late as I had trouble putting the book down.
Another wonderful and enigmatic read by Chloe Neill. This is the 10th book in the Chicagoland Vampires series and writing and storytelling has not degraded or gone down in all that time. Merit, Ethan, and all the other wonderful characters are back in this story and it just draws you in with all the detail and intrigue.
Merit is as amazing as she always was and she's really grown into her role as a Vampire, Sentinel, Investigator, and helping those that need it. Her love for Ethan has only grown and they are in a very good relationship. But Ethan has put in his name to run for head of the GP and he's being threatened and he's worried that things from his past will come to light and he will lose her. Ethan ends up hurting Merit by pushing her away and not sharing his secrets and fears. A series of murders have occurred in this story and Merit, Ethan, Jonah, and the Ombuddies are trying to solve it. These deaths seem to be pointing toward Supernaturals and they are trying to solve it. Also, she's trying to keep Ethan safe and investigate other things going about in the story.
Ethan has become greater and more loving. He's been so challenging, controlling, and also trying to keep himself separate from his Vampires but with his relationship with Merit he's become so much more. His love for her is truly real and his fear of losing her is very real as well. He's showing so much more of his humanity than he ever has before. He's trying to make the world a better place and especially the Vampire world and wants to make a difference.
Definitely worth reading and looking forward to reading the next books.
